Wieliczka Salt Mine and Schindler’s Factory Tour
We invite you to visit Wieliczka Salt Mine and Schindler's factory known especially from the famous movie by Steven Spielberg's Schindler's List in a single journey.
The first is Wieliczka Salt Mine. It’s a guided tour upon which you visit 20 chambers connected by 2 km of corridors on three levels underground. 380 steps lead down the stairs to the first level (64 m below, approx. 210 ft) and the lift will take you up from the lowest level (135 m, 440 ft) in the end of the tour. The temperature underground is always 14 Celsius degrees, the air is cool and belived to have a positive impact on health.
On the way back from Wieliczka we will take you to Schindler's factory.
It was founded by the Jews in 1937, and since 1938 located in the building at Lipowa 4. In 1939 the new factory owner Oskar Schindler - an industrialist and a member of the Nazi Party - shocked by the mass extermination of the Jewish people, created the famous Schindler's List, which allowed to transport to a new factory in the Sudetenland more than 1,100 people saving their lives.
The story of Oskar Schindler was described in the book called "Schindler's Ark" by the Australian novelist Thomas Keneally, which inspired Steven Spilberg to create his famous film "Schindler's List". The film was shot, among other places, in the factory at Lipowa 4.
