Auschwitz Birkenau Tour and Following John Paul II’s traces

Pope John Paul II spoke about Auschwitz during his pilgrimage to Poland in 1979: Yes, in these inscriptions is hidden the fate of countless lives. They shock our memory, touch our hearts. They do not have to sow hatred in us - to show what a terrible effect can bring just hate. Their desire is to help our reason to see evil as evil and oppose it, their desire is to encourage us to do good to oppose evil.

The concentration camp was founded by the Nazis on the outskirts of the town of Oswiecim during the Nazi's occupation of Poland in 1940. The name was changed to German name Auschwitz which soon had become the most recognized place of the Nazi's crimes.

During a tour you'll see the site of the camp: remaining camp buildings and its ruins, residential barracks (including the ruins of the gas chambers and crematoria), several kilometers long camp fence and interior roads and unloading ramp in Birkenau.

Additionally, an important part of the tour is visiting of the exhibition presented in the remaining five blocks of the camp. It presents the documentation of life and detention of war prisoners, historical exhibitions including: clothing for prisoners, bunks and other furniture in the room equipped for the prisoners, the collection of personal property taken from the deported Jews.

After visiting the Museum, you will be driven to Wadowice and Kalwaria Zebrzydowska, places associated with the life and work of the Pope John Paul II.

Wadowice is the birth place of the Pope John Paul II ( former Cardinal Karol Wojtyla of Krakow). City of the Pope is often visited by both tourists and pilgrims. Places worth visiting are: The Pope's Family House and Basilica with 15th century choir and baptistery in which Karol Wojtyla was baptized as a child.

Kalwaria Zebrzydowska is a tiny village with a beautiful, early-baroque sanctuary mounting over the narrow streets. Around the sanctuary the paths in the forest allow for contemplation and prayer in many smaller churches and shrines located on the steep hill. John Paul II has refer to this unique place in his memoris.
